What is?

JAIS is a transformer-based large language model with 13 billion parameters, and a larger 30 billion parameter version is also in development. It was created through a collaboration between Inception, a subsidiary of G42, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), and Cerebras Systems. The model was trained on a massive dataset of 395 billion tokens, including 116 billion Arabic tokens and 279 billion English tokens, to capture the complexity and nuances of both languages.

Handle Arabic dialects and its competitive performance with English models of similar size, despite being trained on significantly less English data. The model incorporates advanced features such as ALiBi position embeddings, SwiGLU, and maximal update parameterization to enhance its training efficiency and accuracy.

Why is important?

  • Bilingual Capabilities: JAIS is fluent in both Arabic and English, making it a valuable tool for bridging language barriers and enabling interaction with generative AI in native languages.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: The model is specifically trained to understand the linguistic nuances and cultural sensitivities of the Arabic language, ensuring that it preserves Arabic heritage and culture.
  • Performance and Efficiency: JAIS outperforms existing Arabic models and is competitive with English models of similar size, demonstrating high performance and efficiency in tasks such as summarization, comprehension, and text generation.

How to use

  • API Integration: Integrate JAIS using APIs available on platforms like HuggingFace, Microsoft Azure, or Core42’s Compass API. This allows for easy downstream development and integration into various applications.
  • Customization: Fine-tune the model for domain-specific applications. JAIS is particularly efficient for fine-tuning in Arabic, making it suitable for a wide range of use cases in the Arabic-speaking world.
  • Deployment: Deploy the model on cloud services or on-premises infrastructure. JAIS can be used through the JAIS Chat app for functionality review and via major cloud providers for scalable deployment.

Examples

  • Automated Customer Support for Arabic-Speaking Customers: A company uses JAIS to develop an automated customer support system that can handle inquiries in both Arabic and English. When a customer asks a question in Arabic, JAIS processes the input, understands the context, and generates a relevant response in Arabic.

This not only enhances the customer experience but also ensures that the support is culturally sensitive and accurate. For instance, if a customer asks about the return policy in Arabic, JAIS can provide a detailed and correct response, leveraging its training on a vast Arabic dataset to ensure the response is both informative and respectful of cultural nuances.
